Resume Review • Your first impression on paper • Includes Main Sections (next slide) • Highlight relevant and related experiences • What does this include? • Error Free! • Have it critiqued if you haven’t already • UCC Drop-in Hours every week: Mon., Tues., & Fri.: 10:00am – 2:00pm Weds. & Thurs.: 11:30am – 3:30pm My drop-in hours are typically: Tues. 12:00pm – 2:00pm

  5. ACCOUNTING PICNIC • Dress is casualbut not too casual… • Who are you there to talk to? • Do your research • Show enthusiasm • Be yourself!

  6. MEET THE PROFESSIONALS • Full suit attire (to be discussed later) • Portfolio • Bring plenty of copies of your resume • Bring a pen and paper to take notes • Ask for business cards

How to make a good first impression • Firm handshake • Eye contact • Smile and enthusiasm • Knowledge of the organization • Groomed appearance • Positive attitude • Focusing on what you want to contribute to their organization • Confidence • Have a professional looking folder or portfolio to carry resumes (no backpacks) • Do NOT monopolize the employer’s time!

What do I say when talking to an employer? • Prepare a 20-30 second introduction of yourself • Name • Major • Grad Date (full-time vs. internship) • What type of position you are seeking • Something you know about their organization • Offer your resume • Ask questions • Asking questions shows an interested and engaged candidate • Do not ask questions about salary, benefits, or anything that is readily available online • Ask if they have a business card, company literature, position information • Express your interest and thank them for their time

Job Fair Bloopers (employer feedback) • Do not travel in “friend packs” or with a significant other • Do not dress casually • Do not ask an employer “What does your company do?” or “What can your company do for me?” • Do not circulate to pick up employer “give-a-ways” • Do not leave a resume on the employer’s table without speaking to him/her

Interview Dress Tips for Women • Suit (skirt suit or pant suit) in traditional/neutral shades (black, navy blue, gray, camel, brown) • Accessories should be minimal • Do not wear revealing clothing • Skirt hems should fall no shorter than just above the knee • Shoes should be close-toed with a moderate heel or no heel • Go LIGHT on fragrance if any is worn at all • Polished shoes; stockings should be worn • Hair should be neatly groomed • Wear away from the face if necessary

Interview Dress Tips for Men • Suit should be in traditional/neutral shades (e.g. black, navy blue, gray, brown, camel) and a solid dress shirt should be worn underneath (white or pale blue) • Ties should be conservative (no cartoon ties, sports team ties) • No earrings or extensive jewelry • Hair and facial hair should be neatly groomed • Shoes should be polished • Belt and shoes should match and coordinate with suit color • Wear dress socks; no athletic socks

Day of the Interview! • Arrive early and check your appearance • Use appropriate waiting-room behavior • Be prepared if the interviewer is late • Be polite and friendly to everyone • Watch your non-verbals • Practice active listening skills • Thank the person for their time • Obtain business cards or contact information • Portray CONFIDENCE

Following up after the interview • Send a Professional Thank-You Letter within 24 hours (no later than 3 business days) • Written & mailed vs. typed & e-mailed? • Provide any requested documentation-(Application, transcripts, references) • Following up if you don’t hear anything • Assess how the interview went

Life after Fall Recruiting • Focus on fall for now but remember… • Are there opportunities after fall? • How do I find out about them? • Eligible to participate in OCI and NinerJobNet access for 1 year after graduation • After 1 year, access to Alumni NinerJobNet • Access to Career Fairs as an alumni
