The population of Estonia is about 1.342,000 million .People speak Estonian.The most important ethnic groups are :Estonian 68.8%,Russian 25.6%,Ukrainian 2.1% and others 4.5%.
The territory covers about 45.227 km2 There are many islands, rivers and lakes, forests, meadows and bogs.
ISLANDS There are more than 1500 islands; they are on the migratory route for waterfowl. Twice a year several hundreds of thousands of birds are visitors in Estonia.
Rivers and lakes There are many rivers, but only 10 of them are longer more than 100 km. The most important rivers are the Parnu river and the Emajogi river. Estonia is a country of lakes too. The largest one is Lake Peipsi which is very rich in fish.
Forests Forests cover about one half of Estonia.The most common trees are pines, spruces and birches. Forests are rich in game. Estonia, along with Finland and Sweden are the countries with the greatest percentage of forested land
There are no high mountains ,but many hills.The highest peak is Suur Munamagi in South Estonia. It’s 318 m. high.
CLIMATE The Estonian climate is humid - temperate. It is often cloudy and rainy in spring and autumn; in winter it is snowy. The sea improves the climate.

The capital of Estonia is Tallin. Other large cities are Tartu, Narva, Kohtla and Parnu.
TALL HERMAN It is 45.5 high and it is a symbol of independence for Estonians. It’s a 9 storey tower . It was built in 1371 with 215 steps
THE OLD TOWN The entire medieval Old Town and its limestone buildings are surrounded by a wall spanning 2,35 km with 26 preserved towers.
THE SONG FESTIVAL Estonians are known as the singing nation. It is a festival for dancers and singers
VICTORY COLUMN It is located in Freedon square and it is said one of the most modern monuments in the world. It is made of concrete and lightened by hundreds of thousands of Led lamps. It was opened in 2009 as a memorial to commemorate people who fought for freedom and independence. It is 23.5 high
It was formed by people of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in August 1989 to protest against Soviet occupation and show the will of freedom to the world . 2 million people formed a hand to hand chain of about 600 km . It was a non violent demonstration. Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940. It regained its independence in 1991
PARNU The city of Parnu is the centre of the county. It is an economic centre located in South–East Estonia on the shores of the Gulf of Parnu with an area of 32 km. It is kown as Estonia’s Summer Capital ; it is the best known Estonian resort, but it is a harbour and a university city too. In the summer Parnu is very crowded, full of life on the beaches and there are dozens of festivals.
