Coronary Arteries • Supply all parts of heart muscles with blood • Left and right coronary arteries
RIGHT CORONARY ARTERY • Supplies blood to right atrium and right ventricle • Branches into the posterior descending artery supplying the bottom portion of the left ventricle and back of septum
LEFT CORONARY ARTERY • Branches into: • Circumflex artery which supplies blood to left atrium and back of left ventricle • Left anterior descending artery (LAD) which supplies blood to the front and bottom of left ventricle and front of septum
Atherosclerosis & Cholesterol Plaque Fats and cholesterol collect and harden in artery, forming plaque Blood clots can form from plaque build-up Pieces can break apart and move through the arteries If coronary artery is blocked by plaque accumulation or by blood clot… Cardiac muscle beyond the point of blockage is deprived of oxygen and nutrient Area of cardiac muscle tissue ceases to function properly Causes damage to the cardiac muscle tissue; called myocardial infarction OR heart disease Atherosclerosis can also lead to strokes Treatment includes healthy diet, exercise and medicine to reduce fats and cholesterol
CROSS-SECTION OF A CORONARY ARTERY Normal coronary artery Bad artery: Narrowing of the lumen Calcification in coronary artery; associated with atheroschlerosis
Coronary Artery Thrombosis Thrombosis or blood clot Atherosclerosis or build up of artery wall • Thrombosis: • the formation of a clot or thrombus inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system
ARTERIES: COLLATERAL CIRCULATION • Network of tiny blood cells • During the time that coronary arteries narrow to the point where heart muscles are limited (coronary artery disease), collateral vessels enlarge and become active • Allow blood to flow around the blocked artery to another artery nearby or the same artery past the blockage • Protecting heart tissue from injury
VOCABULARY WORDS: • Aorta: largest artery in human body • Calcification: precipitation of calcium in arteries; an indicator of atherosclerotic plaque buildup in the arteries that supply blood to the heart • Cardiac Muscle: heart; pumps blood through circulatory system by contracting and relaxing • Cholesterol: steroid that is found in the cell membrane of all body tissues; transported by bloodstream
VOCABULARY WORDS • Lumen: cavity/channel with tubular structure • Septum: muscle tissue between two ventricles of heart • Ventricle : fluid-filled, pumping chambers of the heart
