  1. Arteries in the cranial cavity

  2. Arteries • Internal carotid artery • Middle meningeal artery • Vertebral artery

  3. Internal carotid artery • Terminal branch of common carotid artery • Given off at the level of upper border of thyroid cartilage • Its course is divided into four parts

  4. parts • Cervical part: in the neck within carotid sheath .no branches • Petrous part:within petrous part of temporal bone,in the carotid canal • Cavernous part :within the cavernous sinus gives branches to • A)trigeminal ganglion • B) superior and inferior hypophyseal branches • Cerebral part :after emerging out of cavernous sinus • Branches a)ophthalmic • B) Anterior cerebral • C)middle cerebral • D )Posterior communicating • E) Anterior choroidal.

  5. Ophthalmic artery • Branch of internal carotid artery • Given off at anterior clinoid process • Enters the orbit through optic canal • BRANCHES • 1)while in dural sheath it gives of central artery of retina. • 2)at exit from dural sheath Lacrimal branch • 3)main trunk

  6. Central artery of retina • An end artery i.edoesnot anastomose with any other artery • Enters the optic disc to supply the retina. • Occlusion leads to blindness • Can be visualized in living by an ophthalmoscope.

  7. Lacrimal artery • Branches • To lacrimal gland • Two zygomatic branches • Lateral palpebral branches to eyelids • Recurrent meningeal branch • Muscular branches.

  8. Main trunk • Short and long ciliary arteries • Supraorbital and supratrochlear arteries • Anterior and posterior ethmoidal branches • Media; palpebral branch • Dorsal nasal branch

  9. Add color

  10. Middle meningeal artery • Origin and course • First part of maxillary artery given in infratemporal region • Passes through through two roots of auriculotemporal nerve • Enters the cranial cavity through foramen spinosum • Lies closer to the squamous part of temporal bone

  11. Division and branches • Divides into two • A)Anterior or frontal :larger branch lies closer to pterion.lies close to motor cortex of cerebrum • B)Posterior or parietal.

  12. branches Gives branches to 1)Duramatar 2)Trigemminal ganglion 3)Tensor tympani 4)Anastomotic branch with lacrimal artery.
