Pre-planning and design • Statistics of weather, seastate and water column structure (primarily currents + sometimes temperature) • For period of planned operation (seismic exploration/exploration drilling/tow/facility installation) • Design extremes for lifetime of structures and subsea components (production facilities, coastal terminals, LNG facilities etc) GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
During operations • Real-time observations of wind, waves and sometimes currents to support operational safety (helicopter, diving, ROV, AUV, supply vessels, shuttle tankers, crane barges etc) • Forecasts for planning during operations • Forecasts for shutdowns and evacuations GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
Offshore industry metocean data needs • In operational oceanographic terms: • Hindcasts • Nowcasts • Forecasts • For winds, seastate and water column structure GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
Meteorology • Hindcasts • Mature proven and regularly updated hindcasts (50 years plus) for most oil/gas basins • Long time histories of observations for many basins as basis for validation • Nowcasts • Mature capability supplemented by local real-time observations • Forecasts • Mature capability for short-term forecasts GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
Benefits/potential benefits of GODAE • Hindcasts • Use of scatterometer data has been critical to improving hindcast quality • Potential to improve knowledge of decadal scale natural and anthropogenic variability (especially hurricanes/cyclones and extra tropical storms) • Nowcasts • Potential for better quality analyses • Forecasts • Potential to extend horizon/skill of short-term forecasts with coupled ocean/atmosphere models Potential for improved seasonal forecasts GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
Seastate • Hindcasts • Mature proven and regularly updated hindcasts (50 years plus) for most oil/gas basins • Long time histories of observations for many basins as basis for validation of hindcasts • Nowcasts • Mature capability supplemented by local real-time observations • Forecasts • Mature capability for short-term forecasts GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
Benefits/potential benefits of GODAE • Hindcasts • Altimeter data has made an important contribution to improving hindcast products • Potential for incorporation of wave/current interaction for regions where this has a significant impact on wave climate • Potential to improve knowledge of decadal scale natural and anthropogenic variability (especially hurricane/cyclone and extra tropical storm induced waves) • Nowcasts • Potential for better quality analyses • Forecasts • Potential to extend horizon/skill of short-term forecasts • Potential for improved forecasts incorporating wave/current interaction GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
Currents and water column structure • Hindcasts • Beginning to be used but not mature • Statistics still based mostly on relatively short (1 year) measured time histories • Nowcasts • Some use of EO based nowcasts • Mainly based on local observations • Forecasts • Beginning to be considered but skill not yet sufficient for operational use GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
Benefits of GODAE • Hindcasts • Emerging capability for production of hindcasts of sufficient quality for use in design and pre-planning • Nowcasts • Ability to provide good quality nowcasts of important features based on altimetry, SST, Ocean Colour (eddies, fronts etc) • Forecasts • Potential to provide forecasts to support operational planning GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
Challenges GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
Challenges GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
Challenges • Realising coupled ocean/atmosphere models that make possible improved short-term and seasonal forecasts of weather and seastate • Realising routine incorporation of modelled surface currents into wave hindcasts and forecasts • Realising contribution of better understanding of the oceans to improved projections of decadal natural and anthropogenic climate variability GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France
