SAN MARCOS SCHOOL DISTRICT RECOMMENDED ATTENDANCE AREA REVISIONS 2008-2009
Why are we revising our school attendance areas? • Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary is opening in August of 2008 • Paloma is overcrowded • San Elijo Elementary needs room for growth • Discovery is slightly overcrowded • San Marcos Elementary will be modernized and the last phase is planned to open in the Fall of 2010 with increased enrollment capacity
THE PROCESS • Community information meetings were held at each elementary school in January to present attendance area drafts and collect community comments • Committee with representatives from each elementary and San Elijo Middle convened beginning January 30th. Representatives included parents, administrators, and teachers • Committee met two afternoons and developed its recommendation for the School Board
Why did we have draft scenarios? • Created as examples of what would work: Board Policy, school enrollments, transportation • Created a starting point for the committee • Developed by district office staff and principals
ATTENDANCE AREA GOALS SCHOOL BOARD POLICY • Proximity of students to schools • Educational needs of students • Safety of students • Nature of educational program
The Committee’s Process • Divided into six working groups with varied representation of administrators, teachers, parents, and schools • Groups reviewed comments from community meetings • Each group was provided with maps, policies, enrollment numbers, the district scenarios, and enrollment targets for schools sites • District staff was available to answer questions
The Committee’s Process • Each group developed a draft scenario • Each group shared their draft and rationale • District staff noted similarities and differences and shared these with the committee • The entire committee discussed the differences and agreed to one scenario • The committee discussed potential policy change recommendations
