Nouns • a word that names a person, place, or thing • things can be seen and touched as well as those that cannot be seen or touched • things can also be ideas, actions, conditions, and qualities • Note on Collective nouns: nouns that name groups of people or things (ex: swarm, family)
Examples of Nouns • People: • Ex- Aunt Beth, John, farmer, girls • Places: • Ex- school, France, backyard, country • Things: • Ex- mall, peace, boycott, joy, illness
Compound Nouns • a noun that is made up of more than one word • can be written in several different ways • often begin as separate words, but throughout the years become hyphenated, then combined • if in doubt about spelling, check the dictionary
Common and Proper Nouns • Common Nouns names any one of a class of people, places or things Common Nouns author state school • Proper Nouns names a specific person, place, or thing • always begins with a capital letter Proper Nouns Ernest Hemingway Illinois Peoria Notre Dame High School
