Passages are written on grade level Length of the passages for 3rd grade are 100-700 words (350 avg.) There will be 4-6 passages on the FCAT There is a 60 minute time limit on the test This gives the students about 20 minutes per passage FCAT Reading
Teachers are prohibited from reading questions or assisting students during the test 40 % of the passages will be informational (non-fiction) 60 % of the passages will be literary (fiction) Types of FCAT Reading Passages
Words and Phrases in Context (define a word, synonym, root words, pre-fixes/suffixes, etc.) Main Idea, Plot, & Author’s Purpose (*Most difficult) Compare/Contrast & Cause/Effect(ALIKE and DIFFERENT) Reference Research interpreting illustrations and graphics within a reading passage 4 Types of Reading Questions
Students MUST score at least a level 2 on the Reading portion of the FCAT in order to advance to 4th grade DRP scores are an excellent predictor of how your child will perform on the FCAT The student’s reading progress will be monitored throughout the year with the Dibels test, DRP, and the OCPS Benchmark Assessment Test. These tests are administered throughout the year. School and State Requirements for Advancement
Math items are written on a 2nd grade level Teachers will not be able to read the math test questions aloud or assist students during the test Math FCAT test is a timed multiple choice test Students will bubble answers in their test booklet Students will be encouraged to show their work in the test booklet FCAT MATH
50% of the Math portion will contain Level I type questions (these questions will require students to solve one-step problems) The other 50% of the Math portion will cover Level II type questions (these questions will require students to solve multi-step problems) Types of Math Questions
Students should focus on words in bold face print Students should understand what they need to find out in the problem. They should work out the problem on the space provided They should then make sure that their answer makes sense. Math Clues
Students will be solving word problems pertaining real-world context (not basic computation) Math Vocabulary: Please reinforce FCAT math vocabulary at home (See attached vocabulary list) More FCAT Math Information
We will prepare the students extensively in class for the test. A holiday packet will be sent home for students to work on over the holiday break. This will be very IMPORTANT for your child to complete. A completion grade will be taken. Your child should be at school on time, well rested, and prepared every day Encourage your child to do their best, take their time, and check over their work Have your child eat a healthy breakfast, it is an essential part of their day What YOU can do to help your child
