Commas and semicolons Using punctuation in a complex series OR How to Punctuate a Super List
Complex Series (AKA Super lists) • If the individual elements of a series involve internal punctuation, or when the elements are long or complex, the elements of the series should be separated by semicolons instead of commas. • If the conjunction is included at the end, use a semicolon before it rather than the Oxford comma.
Example • Mr. Johnson drives a Cadillac, which is black and has large, silver wheels; Mrs. Johnson drives a Lexus, which is silver and has regular wheels and tires; and their son, James, drives a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is dark red and has oversized wheels and tires.
