SELF-SERVICE (RFID) AT UNISA LIBRARY GAELIC Millennium Show and Tell Workshop, National Library of South Africa, 9 September 2010 Francois Keyser UNISA Library
IMPLEMENTATION • Tagging of 1.7mil. items with conversion stations (outsourced) • Ensure students have access cards with university IDs (not using Myfare card and Myfare reader) • Staff stations with tag reader (Millennium item status API) • Book return units with bin (SIP2- Millennium & Bibliotheca) • Self check out units with bin (SIP2- Millennium & Bibliotheca) • Sorting unit with 9 bins (SIP2- Millennium & Bibliotheca) • Logins: created by III per Sip2 unit
IMPLEMENTATION • Statistics per login/stat group from Millennium • Decided on a hybrid system (eg. cannot check out more than 1 item at self check out, sensitizing must be done separately) • Changes to infrastructure: • Book return units required physical changes (built in) • Additional data and power points
IMPLEMENTATION HOW MANY: • Per branch: 1 book return, 1 self check out, 1 staff station, 1 conversion station • Pretoria (Muckleneuk library): Same as for branches except 2 staff stations, 2 conversion stations, 1 sorter WHERE: • Muckleneuk • Sunnyside • Johannesburg • Florida • Polokwane • Cape Town • Durban
Self check out • Validate user: student card with university ID (barcode), PIN • Check out item using tag reader (1 item at a time) • Desensitize item • Print receipt
Self check out (step 5: book issued, desensitize, print receipt)
Book return • Return items 1 at a time (unit reads tag) • Print receipt • No audiovisual material (UNISA Library’s choice)
Sorter • Check in items • Sort according to status, item location, 092 tag • A bin for items with On Hold status • A bin for in transit items • 2 bins sorted per item location • 4 bins sorted per item location and 092 tags; different levels of the library • 1 bin for any items that do not match the 8 bins
Challenges • Only On Holdshelf status is identified by sorter (SIP2) • Items at branch libraries can only be verified as • belonging to the specific branch by physically checking • item • When an item is returned via the book return, • replacement cost is not automatically waived (SIP2) • Patron barcode not printed on return receipt (SIP2) • Items tagged but information is incorrect or tag is empty • Inventory and shelf reading using Bibliowand not • effective eg. items attached to same bib record must be • in same order on shelf as on Oasis
