  2. Who is Sigmund Freud? • Born on May 6, 1856 • Died September 23, 1939 • Famous Austrian Psychiatrist • First person ever to open a private practice for the treatment of hysteria. • Coined the term “psychoanalysis.”

  3. So how did he get started? • First started to work in neurology and physiology at age seventeen. Got his degree in 1881. • First job after getting his degree was at the Vienna General Hospital; specialized in cerebral anatomy and medical uses of cocaine.

  4. … Continued • Slowly began to concentrate more on psychosis and hysteria. Was trained by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot on hypnosis. • Spring on 1896: founded term “psychoanalysis.” Joined a psychoanalytic talk group, slowly turned into the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society.

  5. Well, what about his career? • Studied things as far as dreams, phobias, memory, sex, etc. Founded the id, the ego, and the super ego. • Joined Carl Jung (A Swiss psychiatrist) to lecture in the US in 1909. Lectured at University of Vienna during WWI.

So, was he popular? • Challenged religion and old ways of thought with his writings: “The future of an illusion” (1927) “Studies on hysteria” (1895) “The interpretation of dreams” (1900) “The psychopathology of everyday life” (1901) “ Three essays on the theory of sexuality” (1905) “Totem and taboo” (1913) etc. • When Hitler came to power, Freud’s books were publically burned in Berlin.

  7. Overview of Mr. Freud • Was the first psychiatrist to actually treat the mentally ill as patients, instead of defects to society. • Viewed as one of the best psychiatric figures in history due to his discoveries made on the subconscious mind. mind.
