  4. WHY INVEST IN NAUTICAL SCIENCE IN TUSCANY (1/6) • The Nautical Science sector in Tuscany is buzzing with potential for investors and partners across multiple areas • In recent years, Tuscany has become the worldwide leader in superyacht production, with a significant orientation to export • Tuscany hosts the Cluster of Nautical Science including 5 public institutions, providing business and investment opportunities in an environment dedicated to nautical research and innovation • Relevant top worldwide players are located in Tuscany, such as Azimut-Benetti, Codecasa, Perini Navi, Tecnomar, Fipa Group, exploiting all the advantages of working in a creative, flexible and exciting environment • The growth of nautical tourism and the attraction of some coastal areas, has resulted in the expansion of tourist harbors in Tuscany, along with repair and rental services

  5. WHY INVEST IN NAUTICAL SCIENCE IN TUSCANY (2/6) UNIQUE ADVANTAGES IN BRIEF A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT • Excellence: • Worldwide leader in superyacht production, with many companies located in Tuscany • Experience: • Unique expertise in yacht and superyacht production and in Refit & Repair services • Innovation: • The close links between research and industry in the region make it easy to transform Nautical ideas into products with commercial potential • A unique model of collaboration between industry, academia, research centers and public bodies has fostered the growth of spin-off companies, SMEs and leading world-class companies • Companies investing in Tuscany can highly benefit from the overall environment with their own support • Four business incubators across the Region support the growth of small companies; most of them also benefit from regional funds through know-how, technology and scientific skills transfer • An Pole of excellence adopts a specific Program to transfer know-how, technology and scientific skills to accomplish operational goals • Companies are supported by a number of services offered by the Nautical District, such as incubation and post-incubation, equipped facilities, advice and funding opportunities

  6. WHY INVEST IN NAUTICAL SCIENCE IN TUSCANY (3/6) The Cluster of Nautical Science • The core of the cluster, composed of shipyards and of their mainly artisan spin-off of SMEs, is to reinforce innovation systems, especially on the demand side (represented by company systems), through technology transfer • Important elements to reinforce the system are: • Proximity to important specialized areas in Nautical Science • Presence of a great manufacturing industry in Tuscany • Presence of a complex competitive system, characterized by thousand enterprises • Thanks to specialization in superyachts, the Tuscany cluster has great performance for everything concerning product innovation, characterized by innovative processes that are well-established in local SME systems • A key role is represented by leading companies (Azimut-Benetti, Tecnomar, Perini Navi, Codecasa) that contribute to reinforcing the cluster’s international reputation and help spread nautical activities all over Tuscany • The development of the cluster has been marked by leading companies and spontaneous forms of coordination in supply and spin-off systems. Today the spread of nautical activities overall the Tuscan coast is imposing an active role on public institutions, especially the Tuscany Region Source:Tracogna 2012 6

  7. WHY INVEST IN NAUTICAL SCIENCE IN TUSCANY (4/6) • SEATEC, the International Exhibition of Technology, Subcontracting and Design for boats, megayachts and ships, hosted the 4th YARE After Sales & Refit Yacht Experience in Marina diCarrara (Massa) in February 2014 • YARE is organized and fostered by NAVIGO, Service Center for Innovation and development of Nautical Science in Tuscany, and by Polo PENTA, for Nautical Excellence in Tuscany • SEATEC is the only Italian exhibition that is focused exclusively on the world of ship and yacht building. It is a unique event for professionals. Exhibitors are companies that deal with components, mechanics, engines, propulsion systems electronics and domotics, raw materials, third party processing, planning and design, sailing equipment and services. Visitors include: • Shipyard owners and engineers • Brokers, consultants • Ship owners • Port Officers and Port authorities • Importers and distributors of raw materials, equipment and finished products www.seatec.it www.yarenetworking.com

  8. WHY INVEST IN NAUTICAL SCIENCE IN TUSCANY (5/6) Tuscany has achieved impressive results through participation in European Research projects “ITEA–DS – Intelligent tools for emergency applications & decision support” ITEA-DS (2000-2002), organized into five main sequential stages, will develop and verify a set of systems and tools for situation assessment (with focus to emergencies & environmental impact monitoring) and decision support (with focus on maintenance). These include an instrumentation system that allows shipwide access to any type of data from sensors, actuators and any other intelligent control and monitoring device, and a general-purpose workstation for human-machine interactions. It also includes a series of fully integrated higher level tools for automation sub-systems evaluation, ship maintenance and emergency management The Project is coordinated by AutoritàPortualedi Livorno, which controls and fosters port activities in Leghorn “PROMARC – PROmoting Marine Research Careers” PROMARC (2008-2010) will raise awareness of job opportunities in the marine transport technology sector through: • Analysis of current National and European Union schemes to promote the maritime transport sector • - Creation of promotional materials on research career opportunities in the maritime transport sector to be published online and as brochures for distribution • - Activities to attract graduates to a career in research including academic competitions, thematic workshops and summer schools • The Project, coordinated by Foundation WEGEMT in the Netherlands, sees the participation of Florence division of General Electric, worldwide leader in technology and services “ARGOMARINE – Automatic oil-spill recognition and geopositioning integrated in a marine monitoring network” ARGOMARINE (2009-2012) aims to monitor marine traffic due through environmentally-sensitive sea areas. This monitoring will be realized by means of sophisticated electronic tools along with data transmission through suitable data links that will be collected in an independent fashion and sent to a main acquisition and elaboration central unit. The scope is the safe detection, notification and intervention on vessels in emergency situations and the protection of sea and insular environments, endangered by heavy and continuous activities, mainly due to intensive ship traffic which generates a consistent pollution risk The coordinator of the Project is Ente Parco NazionaleArcipelagoToscano, located in Elba Island, which deals with the protection of Tuscan islands
