The Tang Dynasty 7.20 I can describe the reunification of China under the Tang Dynasty and reasons for the cultural diffusion of Buddhism. • A.D. 618- a general named himself Emperor and founded the Tang Dynasty which lasted nearly 300 years. • Rulers restored strong central government, made reforms to improve government • Taizong, most powerful ruler, brought back civil service exams and gave land to farmers. • Brought peace and order to the countryside.

At the fall of the Han Dynasty, many people in China turned to Buddhism seeking peace and comfort. • Tang rulers feared Buddhism’s growing influence. They saw it as an enemy of China’s Confucian traditions. • A.D. 845, the Tang government destroyed many Buddhist monasteries and temples. Buddhism in China never fully recovered. • Buddhism did, however, thrive in Korea. It later spread to the nearby islands of Japan.

The Song Dynasty 7.20 I can describe the reunification of China under the Tang Dynasty and reasons for the cultural diffusion of Buddhism. • After the Tang fell, military leaders ruled China. • In A.D. 960, one of them became emperor and founded the Song (SUNG) Dynasty. • Lasted from A.D. 960 to A.D. 1279. • A time of economic prosperity and many cultural achievements • Faced many challenges: northern nomads forced them to move their capital south to Hangzhou.

The Civil Service exams were based on Confucian principles. • After the fall of the Han, Confucianism went into decline and Buddhism won many followers with its message of escape from suffering. • Tang and Song rulers wanted to return Confucianism to the position of respect it had held before.
