  3. Mineral Groups • Silicates: • ~96% of the minerals present in Earth’s crust • Composed of Oxygen, Silicon, and one or more other elements • Ex. Feldspar and Quartz • Oxygen: • The most abundant element in Earth’s crust • Silicon: • The second most abundant element in Earth’s crust

  4. Mineral Groups • Non-silicates: • Remaining 4% of minerals in Earth’s crust • Minerals that do not contain oxygen and silicon • Ex. Halite (NaCl), Hematite (Fe2O3)
