PhilippiansPlace of Origin & Date • Philippians is one of the four “Prison Epistles”, along with Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon. • The palace guard (Phil. 1:13) is a reference to the Praetorian Guard who were an elite guard unit that guarded the Emperor in Rome. • Paul sends greetings from “…those who belong to Caesar’s household” in Phil. 4:22 • In Phil. 1:19-24 he was waiting for a final decision in his case that would result in either his release or his death.
Philippians Occasion & Purpose of the epistle • The Philippian church had sent Epaphroditus to assist Paul with any needs he might have (Phil. 2:25) and deliver a gift of money from the congregation (Phil. 4:18). • Some have suggested that the letter to the Philippians was a thank you letter for the money that they sent him. • Another reason that Paul wrote the letter is to introduce Timothy’s upcoming visit (Phil.2:19)
Philippians Occasion & Purpose of the epistle • This is also a personal letter from a pastor’s heart to a generous congregation that had supported him many times over the years. • 2 Corinthians 8:1-5 And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2 In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. 5 And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. • 2 Corinthians 11:9 And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so.
Philippians Occasion & Purpose of the epistle • Philippians 4:15-16 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need.
Philippians Occasion & Purpose of the epistle • Philippians has been referred to as the “Epistle of Joy” because the words joy and rejoice occur 12 times in its 4 chapters. Joy is not the same as happiness. • 1 Thessalonians 1:6You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. • 2 Corinthians 6:4-5 & 10Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; 5 in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;…10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;
Philippians Occasion & Purpose of the epistle • 1 Peter 1:6In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. • 1 Peter 4:13But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. • James 1:2Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
Philippians Occasion & Purpose of the epistle • While there are warnings about false teachers in the epistle, there are no sharp rebukes or negative admonition given. • The frequent mention of Christ should also be considered a major theme of this epistle. He is specifically mentioned 51 times in the 104 verses of this epistle
