Purpose • To thank them for the gift he received from them (1:5; 4:10-19) • Uses the opportunity to exhort them on several other points: • Report his own circumstance • To encourage them to rejoice in spite of suffering • Exhort them to humility and unity • To commend Timothy and Epaphroditus • Warn them about false teachers
