Background to Philippians • Philippi was a Roman Colony under Roman law • Paul established the church there and was able to visit it at least a second time (Acts 16:11ff; 20:1-6) • Written by Paul during his Roman imprisonment from 60-62 A.D. • Epaphroditus was sent to Paul from the Philippians with a gift(s) (4:18) • He was sent back with the letter (2:25)

  3. Purpose • To thank them for the gift he received from them (1:5; 4:10-19) • Uses the opportunity to exhort them on several other points: • Report his own circumstance • To encourage them to rejoice in spite of suffering • Exhort them to humility and unity • To commend Timothy and Epaphroditus • Warn them about false teachers

  4. Major Themes • The Imitation and Exaltation of Christ (Phil. 2:11) • Turning bad to good (1:12-26) • Shining as Stars (2:12-18) • Practice Contentment (4:10-19) • Pressing Forward (3:7-16)
