  2. What is a stereotype? • “ A fixed general image, characteristic, etc. that a lot of people believe to represent a particuar type of person or thing. • When someone claims that members of another culture or group all share the same, often inferior or offensive characteristic

  3. Types of Stereotypes • Racial- Native Americans are often portrayed as savages • Gender- Women should only cook and clean • Age- Teenagers are irresponsible • Religion- Catholic families have a lot of children • Profession- lawyers are greedy

  4. Where do stereotypes come from? • Parents and family • The media • Friends • Education • Travel • Fear • Envy • A sense of superiorty • Lack of experience with people

  5. Stereotypes we might see in High School • Preps • Jocks • Nerds • Emo/Goth • Slacker • Drama type • Artist

  6. Consider this… • Do you think we have a stereotype problem in our high school? • What are some other stereotypes you can think of? • What is the harm of a stereotype? • Consider the stereotypes listed. What makes someone a prep, nerd, jock, etc.?
