Language structure • The subjunctive were after Iwish, indicating a present non-fact • The subjunctive had been after I wish, indicating a past non-fact • Sentences of unreal condition related to the future • 1) LSP I • Communicative Skills of LSP I: expressing a wish for something that is contrary to the present fact • Dialogue in full: • What do you wish you were? • I wish I were a deep sea diver. • What would you do if you were one? • I’d explore the secrets of the sea.

  4. 2) LSP II • Communicative skill of LSP 2: expressing a wish for something that is contrary to the past fact. • Dialogue in full: • I wish I’d been a good swimmer. • Aren’t you one? I thought you were. • No, I’m not. If I’d been a good swimmer, I could have saved the boy from drowning.

  5. 3) LSP III • Communicative skill of LSP 3: Inquiring about information under a real or unreal condition. • Dialogue in full: • What will you say if you meet an Englishman? • I’ll say hello to him, of course. • What would you say if you met a being from outer space? • I wouldn’t know what to say to him.
