Ephesians Chapter 2
Our position BEFORE Christ: • We were dead in our transgressions and sins(v1) • We used to live in our sins, following(v2): • The world • The ruler of the kingdom of the air/the spirit who is at work in those that are disobedient • We lived among those who were disobedient (v3) • We gratified our sinful cravings (v3) • We followed our sinful nature’s desires & thoughts(v3) • We were separate from Christ (v12) • Excluded from Israel (v12) • Foreigners to the covenants (v12) • Without hope or God (v12)
Our position AFTER Christ: • We are alive (v5) • We are saved (v5) • We have been “raised up” with Christ (v6) • We have been seated with Christ in the heavenly realms (v6) • We have been brought near (v13) • We have access to the Father by one Spirit (v18) • We are no longer foreigners and aliens (v19) • We are members of God’s household (v19) • We are to become a Holy temple for the Lord and His Spirit (v22)
Why did our position change? • Because of His great love for us (v4) • Because He is rich in mercy (v4) • So that He could show His incomparable grace and kindness in His Son (v7) • So that we would do good works that He prepared for us in advance (v10) • To create one new man out of two (v15)
How did our position change? • By grace (v5) • By grace through faith (v8) • Through the blood of Christ (v13) • By Christ destroying the barrier (v14) • By Christ abolishing the law in His flesh (v15) • By reconciliation through the cross (v16)
Who/What is the church? • Members of God’s household (v19) • Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets (v20) • Jesus is the cornerstone (v20) • We are a Holy temple (v21) • We are a dwelling of the Holy Spirit (v22)
Discussion Questions • Salvation is possible because of God’s love relationship with you. What are ways that we can return that love? • What riches does God have in store for you? How can you thank Him? • How have you personally experienced change as a result of grace?
