WHO MOVED MY CHEESE? By: Spenser Johnson Book Report By Lisa Hackett
Who Moved My Cheese? As stated in the book “is a simple parable that reveals profound truths”. The book consists of 4 characters; Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw. All four of these characters live in a maze, which is a representation of one’s environment; and they are looking for “cheese” , which is what they want in life. I don’t want to say anymore concerning the book, the skit following will cover it all. Enjoy!
Hey Carla. Have you ever read that book "Who Moved My Cheese? by Spence Johnson" Yes I have. It's a book about a simple parable that reveals profound truths concerning communication and change.
What do you mean? Well this is how it goes. There are four characters in the book, Hem, Haw, Sniff, and Scurry. These characters live in a maze, which represents there environment and everyday they go out looking for cheese, which represents what they want in life.
Ok, so basically your saying these people are walking through life trying to figure out what’s going on? Pretty much. Well one day as they were searching for cheese both groups came across a huge supply in the corridor Cheese Station C. Everyday they went back to same place to enjoy the cheese.
I know there has to be more. One day they went to the corridor and all the cheese was gone! Sniff and Scurry had been noticing that the pile was dwindling and had prepared themselves that one day it would be gone and immediately began looking elsewhere for more cheese. Hem and Haw on the other hand , just went home hungry and came back the next day. .
Was there more cheese? . No! And Hem was angry. Haw suggests that they look somewhere else for more cheese just like they did when they found this suppy, but Haw would not do it because he was afraid of the unknown.
What about Sniff and Scurry? Well they searched and have already found a new supply of cheese, in Cheese Station N. Meanwhile, Haw tried his best to convince Hem to go look for more cheese but he wouldn't agree. So finally after days without food Haw decided to go look by himself.
Oh no! Wasn't he scared? Of course he was, but he knew he couldn't just sit there and hope that some cheese would show up.
Well what happened? Eventually, he found the new cheese.
Did he tell Hem? Well At first he was like Yes, I need to go get Hem. But then he thought that he would get more out of it if he found it himself.
So in a nut shell, Change is a part of life that we cannot avoid. The way we react to change is the only part we can control. We need to decide what role we are going to take and run with it. Are we going to be a “sniffs” who sniffs out change early; a “scurry” who runs into action; a “hem” who denies and resists change as he fears it will lead to something worse; or a “haw” who learns to adapt in time when he sees changing leads to something better. Exactly!
When we consider change and communication we must develop an action plan. Johnson did this for us in the text. • Change Happens “They Keep Moving the Cheese” • Anticipate Change “Get Ready For the Cheese to Move” • Monitor Change “Smell the Cheese Often So You Know When it is Getting Old” • Adapt To Change Quickly “The Quicker you Let Go of Old Cheese, the Sooner You Can Enjoy New Cheese” • Change“Move With the Cheese” • Enjoy Change! “Savor the Adventure and Enjoy the Taste of New Cheese” • Be Ready to Quickly Change & Enjoy it, Again “They Keep Moving the Cheese”
As “Haw” realized in the story, “you can believe that change will harm you and resist it. Or you can believe that finding New Cheese will help you, and embrace the change.” “When you see that you can find and enjoy new cheese, you change course.”
