The Integumentary System • The human integumentary system includes skin, hair, nails, and some glands of the skin.
Skin • Outer protective covering of the body; largest organ of the body

Handout Layers of the Skin • Epidermis – outer layer of the skin; made up of dead cells; comes in contact with the environment • Dermis – inner layer of the skin that contains blood vessels, nerves, glands, muscles and hair follicles • Subcutaneous tissue (fat) – layer of fat cells beneath the skin
Handout Structure of the skin • Melanocytes – produce melanin, a dark brown pigment • Keratin – a tough fibrous protein that makes up the epidermis
Handout Glands of the Skin • Sweat gland – produce perspiration, or sweat • Sebaceous gland – produce an oily secretion called sebum that keeps the epidermis flexible and waterproof
Skin Problems – Add On Acne – develops when sebum and dead skin cells form plugs in hair follicles. Bacteria are often trapped in the plug and cause infection and inflammation
Skin Problems – Add On Hives – red welts that form because of allergic reactions
Skin Problems – Add On Melanoma – Skin cancer caused by excessive exposure to UV radiation from the sun and artificial radiation from tanning beds
