Emigrant vs. Immigrant • Emigrant: • Em- Prefix: “Ex” means “out” • A person who leaves his or her country in order to permanently settle in another (E=Exit) • Immigrant: • Im-Prefix: “In” means “in/into” • One who enters and settles in a country that is not one’s native country.
Composition books • Turn to page 24. You pasted your bar graph titled “Immigration Waves” in your composition book on Tuesday. I asked you create three questions you have from the graph. • Let’s discuss this…
“Prompts to help me while I jot” • On the back, I want you to paste the “Prompts to help me while I jot” on the left hand side. • Spend a few minutes compiling responses to the 6 prompts…
Now… • Discuss with your group what you came up with.
“Timeline of Significant Events in American History” • Take a look at this “Timeline of Significant Events in American History”. • Compare the dates to that on the graph you have. See if you can make any connections.
Group discussion • Talk among your group. • Writer: Write down two questions your group noticed on a sticky note. • Runner (gluer): Bring them to the board and stick it next to where it belongs on the graph.
Class discussion • Let’s write down what you came up with
“Waves of Immigrants graph” • What are some questions you have about this? • Compare this to the graph you have pasted in your composition book. Can you answer any of your questions? Do new questions arise?
