    1. Privacy in America Loren LaLonde, Jennifer Wierda, Jeanette Wolfin Chapter 2 Civil Liberties

    2. Introduction Loss of privacy through paparazzi, random drug testing and wiretapping restricts freedom of speech. It violates the Fourth Amendment and intrudes on privacy in general

    3. Our Beliefs Loss of privacy violates freedom and personal rights Random drug tests violate the right to privacy The act of wiretapping is an invasion of property and restricts freedom of speech

    4. Loss of Privacy Harms Society The government is implementing techniques to gain personal information about their citizens Surveillance National ID Cards Compliance 2,000

    5. Loss of Privacy Contributes To A Loss of Freedom If individuals feel they are under surveillance of the government, they will be restricted in their freedom of living

    6. Paparazzi The paparazzi is becoming out of control and the basic privacy laws are not strong enough to protect the celebrities being harassed Princess Diana Current law protects: intrusion of solitude, appropriation of name or lilkeness, publicity of private facts, dipiction in a false light

    7. Paparazzi Government needs to develop laws restricting the payment of these photographers

    8. How Paparazzi Affects You Detracts from newsworthy information Too much time is spent relaying unneeded information Encourages the intrusion of privacy by making citizens want to know more about their favorite stars

    9. Drug Testing Random drug tests are inaccurate. Tonic water can show up as cocaine and Nyquil can show up as a opiate or amphetamine Tests can be too costly Weekly random tests amount to about $70,000 per year

    10. Drug Testing Random drug tests violate privacy rights Amity Valdez of Price, Utah Some students do not want it known that they take certain medications

    11. Wiretapping and Society Wiretapping is a common practice among federal law enforcement agencies. Information gathered through wiretapping maybe used to bring charges against an individual, and it may be used in court as evidence.

    12. Wiretapping violates people’s rights The government has a history of invading privacy. When an interception occurs, your communication may be stored along with passwords, credit card numbers, and social security numbers.

    13. Conclusions If the government cannot devise more restrictive laws surrounding the invasion of privacy, individuals will continue to lose their general freedom of action and the paparazzi will continue their harassment. Drug tests are inefficient, unreliable, and can be used as a form of harassment.

    14. Conclusions Wiretapping violates privacy by intercepting private communications and using the conversation as grounds to take action against an individual.
