  1. World History Bellwork • Head a piece of notebook paper: Name Date Class Period Objective: 4.1.3 - Describe the works of Homer and their influence on Greek culture.

  2. Objectives for Learning • 4.1.3 - Describe the works of Homer and their influence on Greek culture. • Questions to answer: • Who was he? • What did he “write” • Why were these poems important and what can they tell us?

  3. Who was Homer and did he even exist? The Homeric Question • Believed to have lived sometime between 750 and 650 bc • Our text states he was a wandering poet who told tales of the Trojan War. • Many scholars believe he was not a single individual at all - This is called the “Homeric Question”

  4. What did he write about and is it “true”? • The epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey are attributed to him and provide us with the only “historical” evidence of the Trojan War. • Task: skim page 116 and find out when the Trojan War was fought and when Homer was thought to have lived – how many years passed between the war and Homer’s life? • How accurate do you think the poems might be? (Answer this on your own paper)

  5. Today’s Task • Objective: 4.1.3 - Describe the works of Homer and their influence on Greek culture. • Procedure: • We will watch 2 very brief student created summaries of both the Iliad and the Odyssey. • Watch each video and afterwards write a 3 – 5 sentence summary of the plot of each story. • Answer the question: What might the stories of The Iliad and The Odyssey tell us about the ancient Greeks and their lives?
