America After WWI • Wanted to return to normal life, tired of war • More worried about the economy at home • Most Americans lived in cities than rural areas • 1920- 51% of Americans live in urban areas • Kansas- 35% urban • America was changing • 18th Amendment passed- alcohol illegal • 19th Amendment passed- women gain right to vote • More industrialized- women in the work force

Defeating The Ku Klux Klan in Kansas • Governor Henry Allen- felt it was important to stand up against the KKK • Why have masks if you stand for Christian values • Ku Klux Klan- chartered in Georgia • Kansas law- states that it is illegal for “foreign” corporations to do business without a charter • Board that grants charters- made up of politicians who oppose the KKK • Klan appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court- they denied the appeal two years later • Kansas becomes the first state to outlaw the KKK
