Japanese Advance (1941-42) • With the goal of securing oil and rubber Japan begins an offensive directly after Pearl Harbor • They take: • Hong Kong • Singapore • Malaya • Burma
Philippines Fall • May 6th 1942 – 11,000 Americans and Filipinos surrender to Japan, shortly after another 76,000 would be captured • Prisoners were forced to walk 60 miles to the nearest railroad junction in tropical heat with little water – BATAAN DEATH MARCH • Over 25,000 would die
Doolittle Raid • April 1942 – B -25 American Bombers raid Tokyo • Causes little damage • Shocked Japan, showed allies could win
Battle of the Coral Sea • Fought b/w American and Japanese ships 70 miles from each other • 5 day battle ended in draw • New warfare as naval battles would take place without ships ever seeing each other
Allied Victories…..Finally! Midway Guadalcanal 11,000 marines vs. 2,000 Japanese soldiers in Jungle Warfare Japan fled the island after several months of fighting 1st Allied conquer of Japanese held territory • June 4th 1942 • Waves of Japanese bombers attack the Island that is vital to the defense of Hawaii • U.S sinks all 4 Japanese carriers and 250 planes • Last Japanese offensive of the War
Iwo Jima Okinawa April – June 1945 180,000 allied troops take the island of Okinawa 2nd biggest invasion (Normandy was 1st) • 25,000 American casualties
What to do??? • Massive invasion of Japan would cost millions of allied lives • Naval blockade and conventional bombing • Demonstration of new weapon (A-Bomb) on a deserted island
Japan Surrenders • American planes drop 2 atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in a 3 day period • Over 120,000 would die • Sept 2,1945 Japan officially surrenders
