  3. Includes • Skin • Hair • Nails • Feathers • Scales • Sweat glands and their products

  4. Functions • Protection against infection and injury. • Regulate body temperature • Remove waste products • Protect from ultraviolet radiation from sun.

  5. Components • Cutaneous membrane- the skin • Accessory structures- • Hairs, scales, feathers, nails, sweat glands

  6. Three Layers of Skin • Epidermis: 2 layers • Outer layer: made of dead cells • Inner layer: made of living cells • Outer layer is shed every 4-5 weeks.

  7. Three Layers of Skin • Dermis: Inner layer of the skin. • Regulates body temperature. • Contains two major types of glands: • Sweat glands-regulates body temperature. • Sebaceous glands-keeps dermis flexible and water proof

  8. Three Layers of Skin • Subcutaneous tissue: The subcutaneous tissue is a layer of fat and connective tissue containing larger blood vessels and nerves. • Important in the regulation of temperature of the skin itself and the body. The size of this layer varies throughout the body and from person to person.

  9. Hair and Nails • Hair: Protects skin from UV radiation, prevents dirt and other particles from entering the body. • Nails: Protects the tips of fingers and toes. Grow an average of 3mm per month.

  10. Diseases • Skin Cancer: Abnormal growth of cells in the skin. • Sunscreen is best protection against skin cancer.
