Preliminary Investigation On Corrosion In Oil-Water System Akshay Rajopadhye1, Eric Bidinger1, Dr. Vijay Krishna1, Dr. Brij Moudgil1, and Dr. Kevin Powers1 Particle Engineering Research Center1, University of Florida; Gainesville, Florida-32611. EXPERIMENTALPROCEDURE INDUSTRIAL RELEVANCE OF SURFACTANT STRUCTURES INTELLECTUAL MOTIVATION Understand the mechanism of corrosion inhibition by surfactant adsorption on metal surfaces KNOWLEDGE GAPS + + + • Mechanism of surfactant adsorption on metals • Structure of adsorbed surfactant coating • Corrosion inhibition mechanism by surfactant adsorption Fe2+ – Fe(OH)2 e- Steel – • Corrosive medium used: • Aqueous phase : 1M HCL • Oil phase : Motor Oil • Surfactants used: Palmitic Acid; CetylTriammonium Bromide RESEARCH APPROACH • Establish a protocol for two phase corrosion testing • Investigate on the effect of surfactant partitioning on corrosion inhibition • Develop a corrosion inhibition mechanism SUMMARY SurfactantAdsorptionMechanism RESULTS & DISCUSSION • Weight loss method not appropriate for two phase corrosion testing • Corrosion product (Iron oxide?) seems to deposit on test coupons; some of which goes into the mixture turning the mixture black • Apparent weight loss in control coupons less than those placed in surfactant solution • Anionic surfactants have no significant effect on corrosion inhibition • Cationic surfactants seem to promote corrosion • Color change suggests some interaction of surfactants with the additives in Motor oil Cationic Anionic Control CTAB FUTURE WORK • Evaluate the alternative method (e.g. Impedance Spectroscopy) for two phase corrosion testing • Determine the surfactant partitioning in oil and water phases • Evaluate the selected surfactants for corrosion inhibition Acknowledgement: This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 0749481/0749461 and by CPaSS industry members.
