California’s Higher Education System • Community Colleges – 2 year colleges • (i.e. Pierce, Valley, Santa Monica, Moorpark, Glendale) • California State Universities (CSU) – 4 year universities • (i.e. CSUN, CSULA, San Diego State, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) • University of California (UC) – 4 year universities • (i.e. UCB, UCLA, UCSB, UCSD, UCI, UCD, UCSC, UCR, UCM) • Private Universities – 4 year colleges and universities • (i.e. USC, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Cal Lutheran)

  4. Choose schools wisely! • Safety schools • must have AT LEAST ONE safety school • Competitive schools • likely to be accepted, not guaranteed • Reach schools • very competitive, may not be accepted • Pick schools in each category • UCLA, UCB, UCSD, and UCSB are COMPETITIVE/REACH schools for everyone!

A-G Requirements (UCs AND CSUs) • A-Social Studies: 2 years required (3-4 recommended) • B-English: 4 years required • C-Math: 3 years required (4 recommended) • D-Lab Science: 1 year biological, 1 year physical (3-4 years recommended) • E-World Language: 2 years required (3-4 recommended) • F-Visual/Performing Art: 1 year required • G-Additional Academic Elective -1 year minimum • Eligible DOES NOT equal competitive!

Standardized Testing Options • SAT Reasoning (2400 pt scale) or ACT (36 pt scale) • 3 ½ hr test; equally accepted • Required by most 4-year universities • SAT Reasoning: Math (Alg 2), Verbal, Writing • ACT: Math (Trig), English, Reading, Science, Writing • Can be taken multiple times for best scores • SAT Subject Tests (800 pt scale) • 1 hr test in specific subject areas • 2 or 3 required by some 4-year schools • Some UC Campuses recommend tests for certain majors • Student chooses which tests to take • Can be taken multiple times for best scores

Every Taft student has 3 unique GPAs LAUSD: 9th – 11th grade marks on 4.0 scale, with ¼ pt. weighting for all AP classes (senior ranking determined with this GPA, recalculated after 12th grade fall final marks) UC/CSU: 10th -11th grade marks on 4.0 scale, with full pt. weighting for all AP classes and applicable honors courses FinancialAid: 10th-11th grade unweighted marks on 4.0 scale (excludes PE) used specifically for the Cal Grant

Senior Time Line August-September • Register for September, October and/or December ACT (deadlines enforced) • Register for the October, November and/or December SAT (deadlines enforced) Turn in lunch application to qualify for fee waivers for SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests, College Applications, NCAA and AP test fee reductions October • Start UC / CSU applications; work on application essays for UCs and other schools DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF UC/CSU APPLICATIONS IS NOVEMBER 30TH, NO EXCEPTIONS!!! • Attend College Office lunchtime workshops • Start asking teachers/counselors for letters of recommendation for private schools; give at least 3 weeks notice for letters.

Senior Time Line November • Register for December SAT, ACT and/or SAT Subject Tests (if required or recommended by college) • December is the last testing date accepted by UCs and CSUs and other schools (with a few exceptions-check websites) • Complete and submit UC & CSU applications by November 30th – NO EXCEPTIONS! Submit Early! • Apply for EOP at CSU’s, if eligible (first in family to go to college; separate application required per campus; see Ms. Owen for more details) • Search and apply for scholarships Don’t forget to send your ACT/SAT scores to colleges and universities through collegeboard.org and or ACT.org. It is your responsibility to send scores; you won’t be accepted without official scores. Deadlines apply, check websites.

Senior Time Line December • Register for the January SAT and/or February ACT (for only those schools which accept late testing dates) • Continue to research and apply for scholarships • Submit any other college applications for private and out-of-state schools (deadlines vary) • Attend Taft’s Financial Aid Night I (intro to financial aid) on December 10th January • Register for a pin and submit FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov (Jan 1- March 2) or Dream Application • Attend Taft’s Financial Aid Night II (filling out the FAFSA) on January 28th • Double check financial aid GPA in College Office • Register for spring community college classes

Senior Time Line Spring 2014 • Submit the FAFSA or Dream Application on-line by March 2nd and give all financial information to universities as requested (CSS profile for privates) • Submit Intent to Register to selected school by May 1st • Submit housing form for selected university • Register for the ELM/EPT at a local CSU campus • Register for Entry Level Writing Requirement for UCs • Apply for scholarships • If you plan to attend community college, take required placement tests. See college reps, PCCs, or college counselor for more information.

  12. Senior Time Line June • Graduation-Congratulations Grads! July • Submit final transcripts to college you will be attending! It is the student’s responsibility to order transcripts from Taft’s Counseling Office. CLASS OF 2014!!!
