The Geography of China • The geographical features that influenced the development of a unique civilization in China include: 1. The Yellow River (1st Chinese civilization, the Shang developed along the banks of the river) 2. The Himalayans Mountainsseparate China from South Asia 3. Kunlun Shan and Tian Shan Mountains separate China’s western region 4. The Gobi Desertis a vast and rocky region in the north of China
China’s First Civilization The Shang • The Shang had all of the characteristics that made them a civilization. 1. City that was a center of trade: Anyang 2. Organized form of government- dynasty Organized religion- worship of many Gods such as Shang Ti and ancestors Organized social classes- rulers, warriors, artisans, farmers, merchants and slaves 3. Use of advanced technology/ideas- Silk production/silk weaving 4. Written form of record keeping- Ideographs and pictographs 5. Specialized Occupations-Silk weavers/ Silk farmers, crop farmers, artisans, and merchants
Important Leaders • The Qin Emperor’s goal- Unify China and keep it safe- so he built the Great Wall! The Great Wall was designed to keep the savage nomadic herders of northern Asia out of China. • Han Wudi (Han Dynasty)- Brought lasting peace to China, a growth in population, and advancements in medicine, education, the arts, and scientific inventions.
Social Structure of China As China developed, a new social structure emerged, based on power. This social structure was in place as the ZhouDynasty ruled.
Inventions from the Han • Inventions • Cast-iron plow (allowed for more food production) • Waterwheels • Paper • Rudder (for ships) • Improved sails for ships • Medical Advancements 1. Certain foods can prevent some diseases 2. Herbs can treat illnesses 3. Acupuncture
Along the Silk Road • Served as a way to spread knowledge, culture, and religions. • Example: Buddhism spread from India into China along the Silk Road • The Silk Road connected many regions of the world Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
The End of Early China • Lack of strong leadership after the death of Han Wudi eventually led to the collapse of the early Chinese empire. • Farmers rose up against greedy aristocrats and civil war ensued • China remained divided for the next 400 hundred years
