S A W S Sharing Ancient WisdomS Exploring the tradition of Greek and Arabic wisdom literatures Anna Jordanous • www.ancientwisdoms.ac.uk Newman Institute, Uppsala
www.ancientwisdoms.ac.uk Anna Jordanous Aims of the SAWS project: • Record and visualise the links within and between gnomologia; between these collections and source texts; and between collections and their recipient texts • Develop tools to allow other scholars to publish similar material and link it to related texts (ours and others) Materials: • Collections in Greek, Arabic, Spanish of wise sayings or moral advice (gnomologia) from 9th-12th C AD • ‘Source’ texts (e.g. ancient Greek philosophers) • ‘Recipient’ texts that draw upon the gnomologia e.g. Kekaumenos’ writings
www.ancientwisdoms.ac.uk Anna Jordanous Workflow: TEI plus RDF ms (TEI) ms (TEI) ms (TEI) element element element element element Linked Data Web XSLT RDF Triplestore <relation> Geek-Friendly query/browse User adds relationships Folioscope User-Friendly query/browse
www.ancientwisdoms.ac.uk Anna Jordanous What we want to say about people: SAWS ontology SAWS ontology = extension of FRBR-oo, customised for MSS-based texts • SAWS relations about people: we actually used • isReferencedBy • The ontology also allows us to say things like • isWrittenBy, isCopiedBy, isEditedBy, ownedBy, usedBy, isMemberOf (Institution), isAttributedToAuthor, isTransmittedBy, commentMadeBy, marginaliaAddedBy, decorationAddedBy, (section) isIdentifiedBy
www.ancientwisdoms.ac.uk Anna Jordanous Linked Data: Linking out from SAWS data heteregenous ids, easy to find, point to web resources • Places: Pleiades via Pelagios • Texts: CTS ids from digital libraries (plus some others) • People: • Prosopography of the Byzantine World • Viaf • Perseus catalogue • Paregorios • … some we couldn’t find online Moving to heteregenous ids, becoming easy to find, some web resources Ids vary widely, hard to find, some resolve to web resources. Issues with duplicates
