THE LAST SPIN INBAR DAGAN. YAEL WAISELBERG. NAAMA MAIMON. TAL SWISSA
Last week, at 11:23 pm Danny (17) found his death in a Russian Roulette game. He and another street gang member let their pride take over and put their lives in danger. The newspaper staff, went to the scene of the crime and made a full investigation to find out why two young people chose to end their lives: One in death and the other in self destruction.
AN INTERVIEW WITH DANNY’S PARENTS Why do you think Danny joined a gang? “Danny had a lot of problems in school and once he even got involved with drugs”. They continued talking and added: “We think that maybe we weren't around enough and now we are paying the price. We work a lot and we guess we didn't notice what was going on in our son's life lately”.
AN INTERVIEW WITH DANNY’S PARENTS Did you try to pull Danny out of the gang and criminal life? Of course, we had long and hard conversations about this issue!! At first he felt he belonged. He thought they accepted him as he was, and it felt so good. But when I made him understand that they were using him and made him get into trouble, it was too late. He felt that there was no way out.
THE WAY SCHOOLS HANDLE VIOLENT CASES The principal talks with all the children that took part in the violent event, and tries to understand the cause of the fight. She usually involves the child’s parents in these occurrences and invites them to a conversation. The principal can suspend the child for a few days from school or even kick the student out of school. The principal is in contact with the police during all this process, and gives the police information on cases of violence in school.
THE PROFILE AND BACKROUND OF A TEENAGER THAT JOINS A GANG! Family:* Youngsters do not get enough personal attention from their parents.* Parents are too stubborn with their children’s behavior, or with subjects that involve school like low grades. Social problems:* A teenager may have difficulty in making new bonds with other teenagers in his school and in his home environment. He looks for friends to help fill his need to be part of a group.
Conclusion We found out that there are many reasons why teenagers join gangs. The reasons are usually connected to their social life and also to the relationships teenagers have with their parents. We learned that these kinds of violent events can be prevented only if we solve the problem by appropriate and immediate response to the source of the problem. It depends on all of us: parents, teachers and friends!
