Global Energy Agenda: A New Direction 1.5 billion still lack access to electricity; 2.7 billion rely on traditional biomass; Unless we do something NOW: 1. 3 billion will still have no access to electricity and the number of those relying on biomass will rise to 2.8 billion New approach is needed: Prioritization of energy agenda; International framework of action: i.e. Action Agenda (based on concrete goals and targets) Dedicated funding mechanism(s); Performance indicators to measure progress
SE4ALL:A Vision for 2030 • A global initiative for accelerating progress for energy access, while improving energy efficiency and scaling up renewable energy • Galvanizing commitments and actions from partners; • Mobilizing stakeholders at all levels for action to advance sustainable energy goals; • Building a multi-stakeholder platform for action • Launching concrete initiatives, such as public-private partnerships (PPPs); • Supporting capacity building and energy planning for the development of low-carbon growth plans; and • Holding its stakeholders accountable for results. • Bringing energy issues into focus in the preparatory process for and the implementation of the RIO+20 agenda

Green Industry: the UNIDO Flagship Initiative for Rio+20 • Green Industry: the UNIDO flagship initiative for Rio+20 • Greening Industry • Creating green industries Benefits: • Decoupling growth from resource use and pollution; • Creation of new jobs and business ventures, technology transfer and innovation; • Improved efficiency of resource use ; • A reduction of the environmental impacts of industrial production, coupled with a reduction of production costs and an enhanced competitive advantage Plans for Rio: to launch Green Industry as a global initiative supported by a private sector Partnership (in cooperation with GC)
Energy at Rio+20: Thematic Days • Energy will be one of 8 core issues to be addressed during the thematic sessions (16-19 June, 2012) • Energy day will focus on recommendations for an action for the public and private sectors • The conclusions will be carried forward to the main Rio+20 conference Plans for Rio:: • High-Level Roundtable at the UNCSD, launch of the Agenda for Action for SE4ALL by the Secretary-General and the Brazilian President
Africa Energy Ministers Conference14-16 September 2011, Johannesburg • Hosted by the Republic of South Africa, with the African Union; supported by the World Bank and UNIDO/UN-Energy • Objective: to facilitate dialogue and reach consensus on Africa's energy vision for the future • 40+ African Ministers of Energy • Outcome: Johannesburg Declaration • Side event on Training Tools for Sustainable Energy convened by UNIDO
Johannesburg Declaration • Calls for “Energy issues ”to “hold a prominent place in the Rio+20 agenda” • Welcomes“the continued emphasis placed by the [UN SG] and the UN system on sustainable energy as central [for] sustainable development”. • Welcomes “specifically the Action Agenda” [and the] “three goals” • Recognizes “that resource efficiency and green growth critically contribute to poverty reduction, job creation, decent work, social development and a better environment” • Asserts that “expanding [energy] access […] and building energy security is an utmost priority” • Sets outpriority actions (e.g. scaling regional action, utility performance, integrated planning, CB.
UNIDO contribution to COP17: Side Events • Technology Transfer- WIPO, UNIDO, UNDESA, ITU, WTO (possibly UNDP, UNEP and UNFCCC),UNGIS members, UNESCO • CEB side event • Climate knowledge: science, assessment, monitoring and early warning- IOC/UNESCO, WMO, FAO, UNEP, UNEP, UNIDO, UNDP, UNESCO, WFP, UN Water, WHO, ISDR (GCOS, GOOS, GTOS) • High Level Event on Energy: hosted by South Africa, featuring key role of energy in addressing climate change, priority issues for Africa, etc.
UNIDO contribution to COP17: “Greening the COP” • Project Objective: • Demonstrate South Africa's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promote renewable energy sources and ensure a broad climate change awareness by its citizens. • Components: • Communications and Awareness Raising; • Innovative Technology Competition for Small an medium Enterprises; • Low Carbon Public Transportation: eThekwini Municipality; • Solar Water Heater Emission Offset to Support Health Clinics.
