School Districts work with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) to secure funding to offer a specific trade program. School Districts then work in partnership with an accredited institution to offer students: the technical training portion of a Level 1 apprenticeship while students are still in high school; a unique learning environment that connects them to industry certified and experienced instructors; linkages to further skill training and /or employment opportunities; and, Students can earn dual credit i.e. BCIT and NWSS course credits. Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Trades Training (ACE-IT)
The following programs are available or in development: Plumbing (PIAB and NWSS) Hairdressing (RSH) BCIT Motorcycle Technician Foundation Commercial Transport Mechanic Foundation Automotive Foundation Millwright Foundation Metal Fabricator Carpentry (tentative for 2010) BCIT offers training in over 30 other trades. Talk to your counsellor about the possibilities. ACE-IT in SD No. 40
To participate in a District ACE-IT program students are required to: meet the eligibility requirements of the specific program; and take either a Work Experience or Secondary School Apprenticeship course along with the ACE-IT program courses, and their normal graduation course requirements. ACE-IT in SD No. 40
Level 1 program that prepares students for apprenticeship in the building trade. Teaches the basics of carpentry and prepare students to write the Carpentry level 1 exam Combines theory with lots of hands on learning. Tentatively set to run in semester 2 of the 2010/2011 school year at NWSS Students will attend BCIT for about 5 weeks. BCIT Carpentry Program:
Construction math Safe work practices Hand tools, portable power tools and stationary tools Levelling instruments Wood framing Concrete forming Building stairs and railings Site preparation and layout Sample Topics of Study
Strong interest in Carpentry and willing to commit to the program; Be in Grade 11 or 12 and completion of Math Essentials 11 with a C grade; Good health, free of vision, hearing or respiratory ailments; Physically fit and able to adapt to varied work conditions; Good eye – hand coordination; Reference letter from a school counsellor/teacher or employer; Resume; and Interview. Program Costs • $500 Materials Fee; • “District” course textbooks will be provided, but students can choose to purchase their own; student will need to purchase workbooks • Students will also be required to supply their own safety equipment i.e. work boots…
