Sixth Framework Programme Project no. Contract no. 022714 Project acronym: DESALINATION Project title: Assessment of Desalination Mortars and Poultices for Historic Masonry Instrument Thematic Priority: 8.1.B - 3.6 The protection of cultural heritage DL 6.4 News letter 3 Due date of deliverable: 30/04/2007 Actual submission date: 30/04/2007 Start date of project: April 1, 2006 Duration: April 1 2006-April 1 2009 IUAV Revision [draft 1]
SIXTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME NEWSLETTER 3/2008 EC PROJECT DESALINATION Contract No. 022714 Assessment of desalination mortars and poultices for historic masonry (2006-2009) Scientific co-ordinator: Fulvio Zezza University IUAV of Venice
DESALINATION Project -gaining a better understanding of the salt transport mechanism between a salt laden substrate and a material applied on top of that -assessment of the possibilities and limitations of desalination treatments • scientific knowledge on how desalination works • recommendation for a standard to test desalination systems • decision-guideline on how to choose a desalination mortar/poultice • method to assess the performance of desalination systems Methodology (non destructive techniques- NDT) Laboratory tests (poultices and substrates)
WP3 – Case studies Terese Convent assessment of desalination treatment before and after treatment application by NDT measurements
NDT-Research Methodology A B C control diagnosis treatment characterization of supports treatment application assessment of treatment (compared analyses) soluble salt content efficiency of salt extraction (surface changes, colour, temperature, ultrasonic pulses, resistivity) kind of material (brick, stone) assessment of state of conservation colour temperature ultrasonic pulses resistivity application methodology sampling criteria product analysis
WP4 – Performance of desalination systems • Tests performed in laboratory: • characterization of poultices in contact with substrate of diverse porosity • tests on workability and drying behaviour of poultices applied on 2 substrates • study of water flow from the poultice to the substrate • fractional factorial experiments to assess poultice effectiveness on salt contaminated substrates (test on effectiveness) • investigation of the effect of the clay/sand ratio and of the grain size of the sand on the total porosity and pore size distribution of the poultice started
WP3 – Case studies FranceDijon • evaluation of desalination effectiveness of different poultices applied on building materials on site St. Philibert Church Italy-Venice San Geremia Church The Netherlands Germany-Bruhl Waag building Amsterdam Augustusburg Palace
WP5 - NMR research • diffusion plays a minor role in the first stage of drying process • a poultice should be selected on basis of the pore sizes of both poultice and substrate • the poultice applied on the brick with smallest pores (1:3) transported salt quicker than with other poultices • the large pore of substrate can be blocked by kaolin from poultice
WP6 – Knowledge transfer • a feedbacks groups of end users has been contacted and involved in a short questionnaire about Desalination Project and desalination treatment • more information about NMR techniques, MDDS systems and simple desalination techniques to evaluate desalination efficiency and a request of information about how to proceed with badly decayed substrates have been received • link to TUE-NMR and MDDS presentation will be provided The project website (www.bk.tudelft.nl/desalination) has been implemented: implementation in MDDS MDDS philosophy: • assessment building • description of decay • diagnosis: assessment damage mechanism • well defined intervention
