Athens in the Age of Pericles 462-429 • The Golden Age of Athens • Political Life – Assembly = 6,000 for a quorum Stipends for public office holders Jury – chosen by lot to serve 1 year Ostracism – exile for 10 yrs • Funeral Oration – Pericles’ speech at warriors’ funeral stressed rights & duties of citizenship • Rebuilding of Athens – burned by Xerxes the acropolis, Parthenon • Aspasia – Pericles, Culture center of Greece • Pericles - died in the plague of Athens during the Peloponnesian War
