  1. Warm Up In a brief paragraph, please define theme and list as many universal themes as you can.

  2. Learning Goal Today I will add to my understanding of characterization by taking notes on the differences between direct and indirect characterization. I will also be able to explain how cause and effect are related by taking notes and reviewing examples so that I may track an author’s use of time and sequence.

  3. NOTES: Literary Terms Direct vs. Indirect Characterization

  4. Note Taking Format

  5. Indirect Characterization • The writer gives clues to a character by presenting the character’s actions, words, thoughts, and by showing how others react to the character. • We examined the indirect characterization of Homer Simpson during out last class session. Everything discussed was an example of indirect characterization.

  6. Direct Characterization • When the writer (speaking through a narrator) explains or describes a character in the story. • For example if during one episode of The Simpsons, the creators added a narrator who directly describes Homer by saying: “Homer Simpson is a man who loves to eat doughnuts.”That would be an example of direct characterization.

  7. Translate the notes you just took into your own words. Explain the difference between DIRECT and INDIRECT Characterization. (2 Minutes)

  8. Reading Skill: Cause and Effect • A cause is an event, action, or feeling that produces a result. • An effect is the result that is produced. • A single cause may produce several effects. • Effects in turn may become causes.

  9. EXAMPLE • Cause:A failing student starts to do well in school • Effect:Her success results in greater self-esteem • Effect becomes a Cause:Her new confidence leads her to audition for a play

  10. Questions to Analyze Cause and Effect: • What happened? • Why did it happen? • What happens as a result? • Does that result cause something else to happen?

  11. Translate the notes you just took into your own words. How are cause and effect different, and how they are related? (2 Minutes)

  12. Exit Reflection Please explain in your own words the differences between direct and indirect characterization. Also, explain how the concepts of cause and effect are related to each other.
