Define • The key to defining the loss is making it SPECIFIC enough to reduce or eliminate. • It is critical to have a measurement system in place to identify/evaluate the loss. • Begin action planning with identification of process owner and team.
Measure • It is important to understand the current/existing situation and set aggressive goals / targets for improvement. • The baseline data should be charted daily on standardized run charts.
Restore • Crucial to achieve base conditions (fix what is broken) prior to improving process. • Find and fix obvious defects. This may correct some issues. • E.g., execute PM checklist to maintain equipment. • E.g., review existing best practices that have SOPs with proven results.
Analyze & Improve • Combining the Analyze and Improve phases enhances the ability to do problem solving and improvement at an accelerated rate. • The problem solving tools to be used are dictated by the magnitude of the loss. • Identify / implement countermeasures (corrective actions).
Control • The sustainability of the improvement is critical to achieving bottom-line results. • Maintaining performance at or below the target for 3 months is the Process Owner’s responsibility. • Training systems and standards must be updated. • Complete system (SAP, MRMS, QC) changes.
Leverage • Formalize the reapplication plan with dates & owners for similar equipment / process. • Develop a re-training plan on changes for all remaining equipment / process owners / operators.
