  3. Introduction • The role of postpress is • to finish “loose sheets” into a final product e.g books, magazines, newspapers... • Postpress consumes output resources • conventional printing or digital printing e.g. printed sheets, printed web, ... etc. • To describe this operations there are • more than 40 postpress processes in JDF 1.2

  4. Sheet / web finishing process • Block compiling processes • Block joining processes (Binding) • Enhancement processes  Final product • Packing processes Process Categories

  5. Sheet/Web Processes • Sheet processes: • Cutting • Folding • Web finishing processes • Creasing, Perforating, Gluing, … • Cutting, Folding • Stacking-Bundling-Palletizing • or PrintRolling • Partial product enhancement :  HoleMaking, Laminating, ShapeCutting, ...

  6. Gathering • Collecting Block Compiling Processes • Feeding / PrintRolling • Inserting, … • Gathering/ Collecting

  7. Block Joining Processes I • ChannelBinding • CoilBinding • PlasticCombBinding • WireCombBinding • RingBinding  Typically for single-leaf sheets

  8. Block Joining Processes II • Stitching • Softcover • SpinePreparation, CoverApplication • Hardcover • EndSheetGluing, SpineTaping, ThreadSewing, BlockPreparation, CaseMaking, CasingIn, HeadBandApplication, Jacketing, …

  9. Enhancement Processes • Trimming / Cutting / ShapeCutting • Laminating • Gluing • HoleMaking • Inserting • Labeling • ... etc.

  18. ICS for Postpress • ICS stands for “Interface Conformance Specification” • Defines the use of certain JDF elements or attributes for specific domain applications. • Published ICS Documents for JDF 1.2: • ICS Sheet Finishing • Signature manufacturing e.g. cutting, folding, … • ICS Binding • Saddle stitching • Softcover binding • Hardcover binding
