Pineal Gland By Brandi Christensen Sarah Schultz Gloria Parks
Location of Pineal Gland • small endocrine gland • located in vertebrate brain (between the hemispheres; in a groove where the two thalamic bodies join) • reddish gray and about the size of a pea • shaped like a pine cone
Function of Pineal Gland • synthesizes and secretes melatonin, which regulates the circadian rhythms of several biological functions & reproductive function of many animals • synthesis and secretion of melatonin is affected by light exposure to the retina • low during the day, high at night • melatonin affects sleep and activity: high melatonin production induces fatigue, decreases motor activity, and lowers body temperature
Pineal gland disorders • Associated with insomnia or seasonal effectiveness disorder (SAD) • Signs & symptoms • Insomnia • Anxiety • Elevated estrogen and progesterone levels • Immune suppression • Associated with seasonal effectiveness disorder(SAD) • Lowered estrogen and progesterone levels • Low thyroid and adrenal function • Hypotension- low blood pressure Melatonin deficiency Melatonin excess
Current issues with pineal gland • Fluorides affect on the pineal gland • There is a build up of fluoride the pineal gland • in recent study the change the amount • The result were that it caused a overproduction of melatonin
