(Brookwood Gardens and Huntington State Park) • Cars and highways made it easier to travel • Motel, fast-food restaurant's, air-conditioning made people want to travel • Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, Charleston were popular spots.
Bye Bye Agriculture Why? 1. Mechanization-Machines taking over. Machines replaced people. Ex: tractors. 2. Industrialization- Industry taking over. 3. Population decrease (especially African Americans) leaving the South for factory jobs *Tobacco replaced cotton. *SC economy went from being centered on agriculture to being centered on manufacturing and tourism after WWII.
African Americans • Jim Crow Laws continued • NAACP, Congress of Racial Equality, Nat. Assoc. for Colored Women, Nat. Urban League were all organizations that looked for recognition of African American rights. • After WWII “victory abroad, victory at home” (Double V) campaign became part of the Civil Rights movement • Also, Martin Luther King Jr, Brown vs the Board of Education court case, and the influence of mass media.
Take it to Court! • Briggs VS Elliot, 1948 • Parents of some black students in Clarendon Co. asked for the school district to pay for gas and repairs on a bus they bought to take their kids to school. (walking 18 miles) • The county’s white school had 2,375 students and 30 busses. • The black school had 6,531 students and 0 busses. • “SC Parents didn’t want integration, just equality. • This case became the 1st out of (5) other cases like it. All these cases combined were called “Brown vs The Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas”. • Went all the way to the supreme court! (1954) • Result- = all school should be integrated. ASAP.
Backlash…. • The result of “Brown –vs- BOEOTK” was met with violence and delay. • White Citizens Council was created to intimidate blacks and harass whites who supported integration. • Strom Thurmond wrote a book called “Southern Manifesto”. • The book bashed the supreme court for their decision to integrate and encouraged resistance . • It took until 1970 before full scale integration occurred in SC schools.
Other cases…. Elmore VS Rice George Elmore sued for not being permitted to vote in the Democratic Party's Primary held on August 13, 1946, in Richland County, South Carolina.

BSAP(basic skills assessment program) Exit exams
THE 20th CENTURY in SC • Agricultural declines • Textiles decline • Technical industries raise (Michelin and BMW) • Immigration and migration still happening • Many people moved South for better weather and more jobs • Many Hispanic Americans also came into the South • Many people worked in service industries due to the increase of tourism • Military changes (2 major bases in SC closed)
