Results and plans of the new commissioning of the AC mole system AC mole review meeting 11 February 2005 Mirco Coccoli
Outline • Status: the starting point • Upgrade steps • Further upgrade plan • Bytheway: why not before? • Results • Do we need to repeat old measurements? • Conclusions Mirco.Coccoli@cern.ch
Status: the starting point • August 2004 • Request for SSS measurement at Bldg 904 • Dipole geometry measurement software needed operation by expert • Each magnet should be connected separately (stop at the beginning of each aperture) • My request to switch to a more user-friendly control software because: • The software has collected a series of “irreversible” bugs along its modifications • The measurements are often interrupted due to communications problems between softwares • Subcontractor will perform measurements • The polarity tester (Mouse) has proven that the level of automation can be drastically increased • The analysis is performed off-line by one person (>1day per analysis) • The team of C.Charrondiere suggests to change the control software (to GEAX) (many thanks for the excellent work) • Quick shift to a newly conceived system with a new control software with the aim to provide a fast and accurated system Mirco.Coccoli@cern.ch
Foreword: famous quotes • Never discourage anyone...who continually makes progress, no matter how slow - Plato (427 BC - 347 BC) • Plato is boring - Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 – 1900) • An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind - Mahatma Gandhi, (attributed) (1869 – 1948) • Beware of the young doctor and the old barber - Benjamin Franklin (1706 – 1790) • Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire – Reggie Leach • Well begun is half done – Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) • Your descendants shall gather your fruits – Virgil (70 BC – 19 BC) • It is rash to condemn where you are ignorant – Seneca (3 BC – 65 AD) • It is pleasant at times to play the madman – Seneca (3 BC – 65 AD) • The accuracy? It’s better than 0.1mm – J.Garcia-Perez • We can do a full SSS measurement in 4 hours or less… - J.Garcia-Perez Mirco.Coccoli@cern.ch
Upgrade steps • My statements: • 1 year ago: “I’m a magnet guy: I can design and build a 12T Nb3Sn field quality magnet in 8 months…” (too many beers?) • Mid-August: “I will need 1 month to get the AC mole system roughly working” • Beginning of September: “If I follow closely the analysis done by hand, I will take a long long time to establish automation. Nonetheless an automatic analysis will take few minutes” • October: “In two weeks the system will be able to measure in 5-6 hours” • November: “For the first week with 5 measurements I will pay a drink for the “release” of the system” • 3 December: “The mountain of SSS in Bldg. 904 has finished… I can’t believe it! I’ll pay a drink!” (comment: no drink yet!) Mirco.Coccoli@cern.ch
3Dec 20Jan Results • Total of 40SSS measured • System preparation at a 1.1SSS/week rate (non automatic) • System running at 3.8SSS/week (data qualification) • Shut-down • System running at 4.5SSS/week (axis data qualified, ~angle and polarity) • 2SSS/day !!! Mirco.Coccoli@cern.ch
Upgrade Plan • The mole-camera relative position will be checked at each measurement step • Stop the measurement and change mole or algorithm to correct in the soft (0.1FTE/month) • The field angle is included in the measurement and a solution to the poor accuracy has been solved at a first stage • Angle data will be quick to check right after the next measurements (~0 FTE) • Polarity test • Based on full harmonic acquisition (0.5FTE/month) • All the previous points depends on software development team availability Mirco.Coccoli@cern.ch
+2 Students +2 Students Bytheway: why not before? Mirco.Coccoli@cern.ch
Results • Optics method (mechanical axis) • Saw tooth solved • Accuracy of 0.1mm proven with calibrations (and, yes, cross-checks with geo-mole) • Harmonics method (magnetic axis) • Saw tooth to be checked to go below 0.2mm with a confidence margin • Accuracy/repeatability proven many times to 0.1mm • But sometimes… Mirco.Coccoli@cern.ch
Do we need to repeat old measurements? • “Old” measurements have been corrected offline with a realistic method • The subcontracting measurement team will have very soon a table with the parameters to enter for analysis • Follow-up to check if this organization works • At present the SSS: 1,4,16,20,24,31 data have been submitted to the MEB indicating that the accuracy is 0.2mm • All the others are measured with accuracy within 0.1mm • Note that vertical gives you the repeatability • In case something looks wrong we will flag it Mirco.Coccoli@cern.ch
Conclusions • The organization of the system upgrade has been focused on the development itself rather than on measuring measuring measuring. • The organization of the analysis has been focused on developing the analysis software rather than utilizing sometimes days for the analysis of an SSS. • 3 months full commissioning of the system for operation • Additional 3 months for finalization of the analysis tool (mainly done by C.Charrondiere and R.Gorbonosov) and to find/prove a realistic reliability of the data (team work) Mirco.Coccoli@cern.ch
