Trona Care news April 22, 2009 | Volume 1, Issue 2 Doris VanHorn Honored On March 11, 2009 Paid- Call Fire Captain Doris VanHorn was honored by the Board of Supervisors and the San Bernardino County Commission on the Status of Women at the 10th Annual Herstory Luncheon . First Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt chose Doris for this distinguished award because of her dedication and service to her community of Trona. The Commission on the Status of Women is a non-partisan organization that serves to advance the causes of all women and works to identify and eliminate inequities that affects their lives. This organization not only honors women for their accomplishments and dedication but empowers women to realize their true potential as strong , successful women in their communities. Doris has devoted herself to serving the Trona Community over the past sixteen years and has a reputation for getting things done. She has accomplished so many remarkable things such as, applying and obtaining a grant for the community that provided for the dumping of Hazardous Materials; she also contributed to a program known as Trona Care , that allows citizens of Trona to complete community service while beautifying the town; and she proudly sits on the Trona Municipal Advisor Council along with the local cemetery committee. Doris has worked as an Emergency Medical Technician, serving the County Service Area 82 Fire District since January 1993. Doris has also served as the coordinator of Paid-Call Firefighter Program for Station 127 in Trona. Spearheading Fire Prevention and Spark Of Love Doris has just done that. She also teaches First Responder, First Aid, and Fire Science Regional Occupation at Trona High School.. 2. Trona Care News Page 2 Logo Contest Winner A Logo contest was held for Trona Care during the month of March. Trona Care needed a fresh and inspiring Logo to represent the wonderful work that they do. So they reached out to our local High School. Each student was given the opportunity to join in on this contest by drawing a picture that would represent Trona Care while being able to be put on t-shirts and other merchandise. After one month all the entries were examined and though all of the entries were very creative and inspirational only one could be the winner. And That is Erik Benadom. His simple but creative logo captures Trona Care to the fullest. Eric will receive a certificate and a check for $50 dollars. Congratulations Eric! Set on finishing the job Trona Care returned to the house on March 12, 2009 with a backhoe. Once again Trona volunteers join in to help. They filled two thirty yard bins, one with metal and one with rubbish. This was a cleanup that only a picture worth a thousand word can describe. Before 7th & B Street After 7th & B Street B Street Cleanup On February 21, 2009 Trona volunteers joined in to help cleanup a burned down house on 7th & B Street in Argus. Residence saw Trona Care hard at work. Wanting to make their neighborhood a better place, they grabbed their gloves and shovels and joined in. Trona Care removed 3,000 pounds of metal, and 11,000 pounds of burned wood and rubbish.

3. Trona Care News Page 3 Wildflowers in The Desert Wildfires Prevention Each year everyone waits in great anticipation to see what nature has in store for us in the form of wildflowers. Because of a wet winter this year spring in the desert is nothing short from amazing. There are so many varieties of colorful wildflowers and so many places to see them. I If you took Red Rock - Randsburg Rd and Trona Rd, around Ridgecrest and Trona you will see both are gleaming with beauty from the Desert Dandelion, Bladder pod, Goldfields, New-Mexico Plumeseed, and a bit of Phacelia. But just as you get to Trona on the north side , about three minute walk off the main Road, there was a pocket of Sandy Dune “ish” soil covered with Sandy Verbena and mixed yellow Compsites. Even up in Figueroa Mountains, the lower elevation areas are about done flowering while upper elevation areas on the cat-way Road and just beyond are dense patches of poppies and Lupines cover the hillside in many areas, definitely worth a trip to see before it’s over. No matter if you go to Kern County, Inyo County, Trona, Panamint Valley or anywhere in the Desert the wildflowers are a wonderful sight to see. So whether it is in the mountains or even in your own back yard, the next time you see a wildflowers stop and enjoy its beauty because it is truly a gift from nature. • Living in the desert surrounded by nature can be serene and a beautiful setting for many people. But like anything else, with the benefits come some risks. Because we live where conditions are dry, wildfires can pose a threat – not only because of fuel to burn, but also because rural areas and remote locations don’t often have easy access for firefighters. Wildfires are one of the most destructive natural forces known to mankind. While sometimes caused by lighting, nine out of ten wildfires are human- caused. Here are some safety tips to follow when visiting areas where wild land fires can ignite. • Safe way to build, maintain, and extinguish a campfire • Clear campfire sight down to bare soil • Circle the pit with rocks • Build campfire away from overhanging branches, steep slopes, dry grass, and leaves • Keep a bucket of water and a shovel nearby • Never leave a campfire unattended • When putting out the campfire, drown the fire, stir it, and drown again • Some other Safety Tips • Never park your vehicle on dry grass • Stay calm during an emergency • Create a 30 – 100 foot safety zone around you home by removing any dry weeds or brush. • Wildfire preventions is all about being smart and being safe. 4. Trona Care News Page 4 Community Announcements Cell Tower Youth Baseball Believe it or not, Trona’s cell tower is in the works. In a recent e-mail to his employees ArzellHale stated,” I just visited the cell tower site. The tower will be on top of the building when it is finished. NEVER GIVE UP!!!!” Youth baseball is on its way to become a permanent home in Trona. Jessica and Andy Ramos are spearheading the community to help re - build fields up behind the elementary school. We are looking for donations as well as sponsors, for the Little League T-Ball and Baseball fields. The re-development of these fields will not only help rebuild our community and benefit our children, but also will bring business to the area during home games. We need these fields so we can have games in Trona. Currently, only T-Ball games are held in Trona, the other teams are held in Ridgecrest. Little League will help our kids to learn about teamwork, and teach them good sportsmanship. So if you wish to help please contact Andy Ramos at (760) 372-4631 Every child should feel like an MVP!! Cemetery Expansion The cemetery in expanding to across the street. Help is needed to put up the fencing around the property.
