General Information • Location- In North America, it ranges from Alaska and northwest Canada into the northwestern region of the lower 48 states. • Habitat- Open areas including tundra, prairie, wet meadows, and coastlines, often within forested regions. • Physical Characteristics- Females range in size from 200-450 lbs while males can weigh up to 800lbs. They measure from 6.5ft to 9ft tall when standing up. • Food Source- They eat large amounts of food, and are omnivorous but selective feeders. They eat berries, insect grubs, rodents, carrion, salmon, trout, young ungulates, and sometimes livestock. • Mating Habits- Grizzly Bears mate during May or June and two or three small cubs are born in January, February, or March.
Endangerment • Why the species is endangered-The population of grizzly bears in the lower 48 states of the United States is only 1% of what it was 200 years ago. 180 years ago the population was around 100,000 while today the population is fewer than 1,000 bears. • Reasons- Habitat destruction including timber harvesting, road building, and other kinds of development and extreme hunting are the two primary reasons for the endangerment of the grizzly bear.
What is being done • Grizzly bears were originally part of the Endangered Species Act but in 2005 they were taken off the act meaning that limited hunting and trapping of grizzly bears may soon resume after 30 years • The Endangered Species Act clearly worked for more than 30 years to help protect the grizzly bear, taking the bears of the act now doesn’t make any sense.
Our Plan • Our plan is to fight to get the Grizzly Bears placed back on the Endangered Species Act meaning that it will be illegal everywhere to hunt Grizzly Bears. AHHHHHHH
