The Engineering Design Process For TheRadio By Haley Darlinton
Identifying the Problem • In 1899 2 competitors were competing for the America’s Cup. While they were competing in the ocean everyone on land had no idea of what was happening. They had to wait until the ships got back to land before having any news. That was a problem.
Brainstorming • A Electrical engineer named James Clerk Maxwell theorized that electromagnetic signals could be transmitted.
Design • Heinrich Hertz designed a device that could send dots and dashes though the air to other places so they could be decoded. • In 1887 Nikola Tesla designed a coil that is still used today in some radio and television sets.
Build, Test, Redesign • Not everything worked perfectly the first time. Inventers had to build, test, and redesign most all inventions. An example of that would be when Heinrich Hertz took 4 years to produce electromagnetic waves. He probably had many experiments and changes to make before it worked.
Share Results • Heinrich Hertz shared his discoveries by writing and publishing a book. • GuglielmoMarconi shared his information by commercializing his wireless telegraphs.
