READY, STEADY…WAIT! Exploring was more than trailblazing. Proper outfitting and preparation were needed. We will begin with some basic yet important skills.
The Compass show you many things… MOST IMPORTANTLY: • It Provides a Reference Direction ( Magnetic North ) • It helps you keep a course.
THE RED MARK INDICATES MAGNETIC NORTH. THIS FLUER DE LIS WILL ALWAYS POINT TO NORTH. THE YELLOW ARROW INDICATES THE DIRECTION YOU ARE FACING.
YOU FIND YOUR COURSE ON A COMPASS BY READING THE MARKINGS ON THE COMPASS ROSE. THE MARKINGS ARE THE CARDINAL DIRECTIONS
AT THIS MOMENT THE COMPASS SHOWS YOU FACING EAST. WHAT DIRECTION ARE YOU FACING WHEN THE ARROW STOPS? EAST WEST SOUTH NORTH
WHAT ABOUT WHEN THE ARROW STOPS THIS TIME? WHAT DIRECTION ARE YOU FACING? EAST WEST SOUTH NORTH

TRY THIS ONE: YOU WERE FACING NE. NOW YOU ARE FACING? SW NORTH 225 DEGREES SSW
The Spyglass would be a useful tool. But Not indispensible. Try Again
A screaming baby? Ehhhhhh, probably not… Unless you really liked babies. Try Again
Reference Books? I like your train of thought, but… They’re heavy and take up space. Try Again
Hmmmmm….. A covered wagon is nice, but not necessarily important. Try Again
The Lantern is useful at night, But we’ll travel during the day time. Try Again
Gold coins, or currency? They are certainly useful at times, but unnecessary weight for an explorer. Try Again
GOOD JOB Explorer!
GOOD JOB! Both SW and 225 are correct. Just Extend the Yellow line farther To see this is true.
HMMM…TRY THAT AGAIN……………..
Map Series Mr. Jenkins, this would be the start of the map lessons section. It would have a similar look to the compass section.
