Apollo Summary • The Apollo program was designed to land humans on the Moon and bring them safely back to Earth. • Six of the missions -- Apollos 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17 -- achieved this goal. • Lunar surface experiments included soil mechanics, meteoroids, seismic, heat flow, lunar ranging, magnetic fields and solar wind experiments. • Apollo 17 included the first professional scientist (Geologist), Harrison Schmitt

  13. Skylab • America's first experimental space station. Designed for long duration mission • Program objectives were twofold: To prove that humans could live and work in space for extended periods, and to expand our knowledge of solar astronomy • Three three-man crews occupied the Skylab workshop for a total of 171 days, 13 hours. It was the site of nearly 300 scientific and technical experiments

  15. Apollo-Soyuz Test Project Apollo-Soyuz was the first international manned spaceflight. It was designed to: • test the compatibility of rendezvous and docking systems for American and Soviet spacecraft • to open the way for international space rescue as well as future joint manned flights

  16. Apollo Budget • After the last lunar landing, total funding for the Apollo program was about $19,408,134,000. The budget allocation was 34 percent of the NASA budget.
