  2. Greek Word Roots A word root is a part of a word. It contains the core meaning of the word, but it cannot stand alone. A prefix is also a word part that cannot stand alone. It is placed at the beginning of a word to change its meaning. A suffix is a word part that is placed at the end of a word to change its meaning. Often you can guess the meaning of an unfamiliar word if you know the meaning of its parts; that is, the root and any prefixes or suffixes that are attached to it.

  4. Culture • Philosophy: comes from the Greek word meaning Lover of Wisdom • Mythology: legends of gods and goddesses, stories about customs and rituals in ancient Greece

  5. Athletics • Olympics: First record of games dated 776 BC. Competitions were held every four years. Champions were considered heroes and were remembered in poems and songs. First modern international Olympic games held in Greece in 1896. • Marathon: a running race the distance of 26 miles. Gets its name from an ancient Greek legend of a soldier who had to run from the city of Marathon to Athens to announce victory in a battle. The distance from Marathon to Athens is 26 miles, the distance of a modern Marathon race.

Ancient Greece • Parthenon: A temple built to honor the Greek goddess Athena (goddess of wisdom) on The Acropolis, the highest point of the city of Athens. • Parthenon in Nashville: originally built in 1897 to celebrate 100 years of Tennessee history. Now it is part of a large park (Centennial Park) in downtown Nashville and contains an art museum.

  7. Food and Fashion • Greece is full of olive groves. The Olive Tree, "the tree that feeds the children" according to Sophocles, is the protagonist of the Greek nature and history as olive oil is the protagonist of the Greek diet.

  8. Food and Fashion • Tunic: a piece of cloth worn in ancient Greece. The hemline was decorated with the symbol of the city-state where you lived.

  9. Music • Rembetiko: a type of modern, urban Greek music • Bouzouki: a musical instrument having 6 or 8 strings, played with a metal pick
