  3. I. What is rhetoric? • Rhetoric: the art of persuasion.

  4. II. Purpose of Arguments • To…inform, convince, explore, make decisions, meditate, pray, and much more! • To…PERSUADE (sometimes) in order TO WIN! • What’s the difference between an argument and persuasion? • Argument: to use evidence and reason to discover some version of the truth. • Persuasion: to change a point of view or to move others from conviction to action. • Ultimately, you should develop your writing skills to form “academic arguments”.

Occasions for Arguments • Arguments about the PAST: • AKA “Forensic Arguments” • Rely on precedents • Arguments about the FUTURE: • AKA “Deliberative Arguments” • Rely on “Forensic Arguments” and past events, facts, logic, etc. • Arguments about the PRESENT: • AKA “Epideictic/Monial Arguments”

  11. PATHOS • Emotional Arguments: images, words, sounds, etc. • To generate, arouse, stir up an emotional response. • More for persuasion than for arguments. • Building bridges to connect to the reader/audience: • Personal stories, relating to them, etc. • Sustain logical arguments. • HUMOR =)
