Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site Justification for Inscription: “The Derwent Valley saw the birth of the factory system, when new types of building were erected to house the new technology for spinning cotton developed by Richard Arkwright.”

The need to provide housing and other facilities for workers and managers resulted in the creation of the first modern industrial towns”
Mission To conserve and promote the unique and important cultural landscape of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site by protecting its outstanding universal value, interpreting its assets, enhancing its character and appearance and developing its economic well-being in a sustainable manner.
Aims Key Aims 1. To protect, conserve and enhance the outstanding universal value of the Site. 2. To promote public awareness and access to the Site 3. To promote the development of sustainable tourism within the Site. 4. To enhance the economic and social wellbeing of the Site. 5. To promote public understanding of the Site by facilitating research. 6. To promote educational use of the Site for formal and informal learning. 7. To build strong partnerships with local, regional and national stakeholders. 8. To work with partners to access funding and deliver projects.
Management • A partnership of local authorities, charitable trusts and businesses • Run by a Board of local authority and private individuals. Chaired by Leader of DCC. • A range of Panels and Working Groups deliver projects

Challenges • Not a cohesive single site • A range of management models • All sites at different stages of development • Private companies have to operate commercially • Limited budgets • Multiple stakeholders
Current Projects • Cromford: Arkwright Society Master Plan. Building 17. • Gateway to northern part of WHS • Visitor centre to attract and disperse visitors around the Cromford cluster of sites • £2 m from HLF Awaiting ERDF funding • Derby: Silk Mill now closed but will re-open with events, pop-ups etc • Work with Derby team to re-vision the museum and develop funding bids
Current Projects • Darley Abbey: Working with Derby CC and owners to protect and develop the site. • John Smedley’s Mill: Working with the company to develop its collection and archive. Possibility of exhibitions. • Belper: Working with English Heritage and the owners of the North and East Mill to improve the offer • Tourism and Marketing Plan: Work to strengths as the attractions improve • Interpretation Plan: To deliver higher standards
Future Projects • Management Plan for UNESCO: To be delivered by 2012. A major piece of work which is required to maintain WHS status. • Marketing: How do we market such a diverse range of sites? • All together? • As Clusters? Cromford – Belper – Derby • Around themes geared to target markets? • Arts projects: Subject to funding
